Emily Aberi

Cohort 1 Fellow

My name is Emily Aberi and am currently a fourth year student at the Jomo kenyatta university of agriculture and technology pursuing applied bioengineering. I was born and raised in Nairobi Kenya in a family of 3 children. I attended Harambee primary school where completed my primary school education then proceeded to Moi girls high school Eldoret for my high school education. Ever since I was a little girl I was always passionate about sharing and growing up volunteering in my community gave me the opportunity to  make positive impact in the lives of the people around me.In 2017 I took part in heroes for change social mobilization volunteer programme based on unilever sustainable living plan which enabled me to educate new mothers about the importance of hand washing with soap in order to prevent neonatal deaths and I was successfully able to reach over 2000 women in Nairobi And kiambu counties. After that I took part in Malala project by the kenyagirlguides association which advocates for girl child education by addressing the challenges that hinder it. I have also taken part in Macheo leadership programme at Strathmore university which enabled me to volunteer alongside spanish citizens in kitui county where we painted classes and renovated classes for primary school children. I have also taken part in many conferences such as the United Nations Environmental Assembly ,Sub-Saharan Africa Model United Nations  and International Youth Day as a delegate. I am currently the organising secretary for the Kenya red cross society jkuat chapter which has enabled me to encourage more of my peers to take part in volunteer work through our various programmes such as pad drive which enables us to donate sanitary towels to primary school girls to ensure they stay in school and blood drive  which encourages blood donation.
